The Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution—the country’s preeminent legal journal of arbitration, negotiation, mediation, settlement, and restorative justice—today published the web edition of Volume 25, Issue 1 (Fall 2023). The print edition of the issue is forthcoming.

Accessible at Volume 25.1: Fall 2023, this issue contains a transcript from the Twenty-Second Annual International Advocate for Peace Award, Honoring Gloria Steinem; an Article by Imre Stephen Szalai; and Notes by Jessica Lalehzar, Chelsea Hill, Halle Jaffe, and Elizabeth Neuburger.

The Journal honored Gloria Steinem’s lifetime of advocacy and achievement at the Twenty-Second Annual International Advocate for Peace (IAP) Awards on March 29th, 2023. Ms. Steinem was celebrated as a leader of the feminist movement for over five decades, a journalist and author, and the co-founder of Ms. Magazine. The Journal noted her role as a powerful anti-war activist, and for championing the Equal Rights Amendment, her powerful opposition to the South African Apartheid system of racial separation, her role in a Women’s March across the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, and, closer to home, her work alongside Cardozo students at the Lenape Center to address the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons crisis in the United States.

Imre Stephen Szalai is a professor at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law and a graduate of Yale University and Columbia Law School, where he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar.  He is also a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution at the University of Missouri, and he actively serves as an arbitrator.  He is fascinated by the uses and history of arbitration, and he has written articles, book chapters, and books about the development of arbitration in the United States.

Jessica Lalehzar is a 3L student at Cardozo School of Law. Over the 2023-2024 academic year, Jessica served as Managing Editor for Volume 25 of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution. Her Note "Don’t Foreclose on Me: ADR’s Role in Regulating the Foreclosure Power of Homeowners Associations in the Aftermath of COVID-19" explores the issues associated with judicial foreclosures commenced by Homeowners associations in condominiums and cooperatives. The Note proposes mediation as both an efficient form of dispute resolution as well as a viable alternative to costly judicial intervention in the face of an unprecedented pandemic.

Chelsea Hill is a 3L student at Cardozo School of Law. Over the 2023-2024 academic year, Chelsea served as Senior Notes Editor for Volume 25 of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution. Her Note "Improving New York City’s COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate for Public Sector Workers: A Collaborative Framework for Labor-Management Relations in High Impact Industries" explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the workplace and provides insight to the legal landscape relating to vaccine mandates. The Note proposes a collaborative framework to balance the needs of public sector employees and the government.

Halle Jaffe is a 3L student at Cardozo School of Law. Over the 2023-2024 academic year, Halle served as Executive Editor for Volume 25 of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution. Her Note "Easing Evictions: The Need for Mediation and Formal Eviction Guidelines Between New York City Landlords and Rent-Stabilized Tenants" explores the current unsatisfactory and illegal eviction practices in New York and proposes the use of mediation as a tool to help landlords evict rent-stabilized tenants in a mutually beneficial manner to construct high-rises, improve their buildings, and increase the housing supply.

Elizabeth Neuburger is a 3L student at Cardozo School of Law. Over the 2023-2024 academic year, Elizabeth served as a Notes Editor for Volume 25 of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution. Her Note "Victim-Offender Mediation: A Missing Component of a Multi-Pronged Approach to Reduce New York City Subway Crime" explores the complex issues surrounding subway crime victims and perpetrators in New York City. The Note proposes the need for victim-offender mediation to reduce the likelihood of recidivism, and benefit the community of subway riders through a method that has not been implemented in the past.

The Executive Board of the Journal would like to extend its deepest gratitude to each and every Staff Editor and Editorial Board member who worked so diligently on editing the Articles and Notes for this issue.
